You're title is at odds with your actual article. The war was exactly about slavery. The south seceded and fired on Ft Sumter in order to ensure they could keep slavery as an institution.

Lincoln's (and the north's) position was to maintain the union. Agreed that it was not to abolish slavery. Lincoln believed that issue should have been addressed legislatively.
