You have two different issues with Americans here which may or may not overlap or go partly hand in hand- entitlement/exceptionalism and individualism.

First, merely by being American some tourists think they are entitled to special treatment.

Second, the individualism? I prefer to call it "TOXIC individualism." This mentality is rooted in our culture of pioneers and mountain men and Horatio Alger " I made it on my own with no help from anyone " faux meritocratic mentality!

Both of these traits are why we have a disasterous healthcare system, high levels of income inequality and a govt that some want to drown in a bathtub lest someone get a benefit they may not have "earned."

It is disgusting!

I lived in Shenzhen China for ten weeks in 2015 and when going to pubs or other locations the absolute WORST people in the establishment were always other Americans- they talked to loud, talked about themselves too loudly and were narcissistic. They were also patronizing of the local culture. Two minutes in talking to these folks made me move to a table farther away so nobody would think I was like that.

The fun people- Australians! Hung out w a bunch of them at the pub watching Aussie Rules Football.
