He joins a long line of other Republicans who, while stating their opposition to Trump, abandon the field rather than stay in the fight.

Congressman Fred Upton in Michigan for example- under newly drawn districts he was put into the same district as his GOP colleague Bill Huizenga (whom I ran against in 2016 for the Michigan 2nd congressional district). Huizenga is a shallow thinker but a savvy opportunist who follows the political winds quite well. He has been on stage with Trump team during his election runs and never criticizes the MAGA nuts. Fred Upton could have run for the seat in the district in a primary against Huizenga and at least made the public case that Trump and his MAGA movement are destructive. Instead, Fred retired.

At least Cheney ran against a nut- and lost. Peter Meijer ran against a Trumper MAGA John Gibbs in MI-3CD - and lost. But at least they made the argument on the political field of battle- they didn't retreat.

Another consideration- you don't get this from the movie Spartacus, but the gladiator/slave army he put together roamed the Italian peninsula for TWELVE years before finally getting pinned down and defeated. They put up a fight!
