Newsguard has identified a network of 167 websites "masquerading as independent local news publishers in the U.S." to spread Russian disinformation. These are linked to a former deputy sheriff from Florida who now lives in Moscow. John Mark Dougan, a former Florida deputy sheriff who fled to Moscow after being investigated for computer hacking and extortion. Websites purport to be local web based news outlets- Names like D.C. Weekly, the New York News Daily, the Chicago Chronicle and a newer sister publication, the Miami Chronicle.
