When the Constitution was written, most people considered themselves citizens of their respective states first and only US citizens secondarily. That is part of their states rights argument.
Also, to claim "the founders wanted states rights to prevent tyrannical govt" is also FALSE- you essentially quoting people like Patrick Henry - a man who OPPOSED the Constitution- he wanted to keep the Articles of Confederation and a weak central govt
Also Slavery was ALWAYS an issue in the continental colonies and America. Rhode Island banned the importation of slaves in 1774! Benjamin Franklin in Pennsylvania, as well as John Jay and Alexander Hamilton in New York, served as officers in their respective state antislavery societies. The prestige they lent to these organizations ultimately contributed to the gradual abolition of slavery in each of the Northern states.
The constitution was written as a compromise by giving slave states greater power than non-slave states - slavery was an issue from the start
