There is a clear downside canceling student loans. There are millions of people who had loans and paid them off who would feel "why now" and " I paid mine" Then there are millions who never went to college who would also feel like they paying other people's college loans
This is more complicated than simple IMO. It may be politically prudent to merely keep putting the payments on a moratorium.
