Republicans have had it out for the Dept of Ed for decades. Reagan had abolition in the 1980 Republican platform.

The Department's origin goes back to 1867, when President Andrew Johnson signed legislation for a Department of Education. But it was Jimmy Carter who in 1980 made it a cabinet level department.
