quote: Gun ownership for a Black man in America is a double-edged sword. It may protect you, but it can also be an excuse to kill you. A white man with a gun in some circles is considered a patriot, and a Black man is regarded as a thug or at least a threat.

Great article. I own two guns as a progressive Democrat - both hand guns . I don't hunt. But conservatives and rightwingers wo think only they have guns need to re-think this-

My wife and I attended several black lives matter events here in Grand Rapids in 2020 and at each event there were a couple young black men with handguns on their hip in holsters- open carry is legal in Michigan, no special license required.

I agree - not everyone should own a gun or even carry it. My concern is for those that buy one and think of it as a talisman- i.e. just having it will be a protection. But in reality if buying a gun, one must face one's inner self- Do you have it in you to actually shoot someone? If you even doubt that you could shoot someone, that hesitation in the moment will get you killed with your own weapon. This has been statistically proven.
