One further point. I believe war between the slave-holding south and the northern states was inevitable. Had the US Govt allowed the southern states to secede peacefully, war would still have happened. The slave south was an expansionist group looking to move slavery farther west and even discussed taking over Cuba and Brazil! At some point, had we developed into two nations conflict would have erupted at the very least in the west. One can see this played out in Missouri for example
