Michigan auto no-fault law changes affect vulnerable road users
For fellow Michigan cyclists and runners and even pedestrians. Changes to Michigan’s No-fault insurance can leave you vulnerable. Bryan Waldman and the League of Michigan Bicyclists did an analysis.
If you already own a car and thus have car insurance you will be covered under YOUR auto insurance if you are hit by another person driving their vehicle. So it is necessary to consider the personal injury coverage YOU choose for yourself. It used to be you would automatically be covered by lifetime medical if that became necessary. But now you can opt out of lifetime medical and choose lower levels. But if you chose, for example, $250K and had catastrophic injuries exceeding that cost you would deplete that money very quickly.
The people REALLY screwed in the new law are people who do NOT own a car! They will be subject to either their own medical coverage (assuming they have health insurance and all too many of our fellow citizens do not) or they will be at high risk for bankruptcy and going on Medicaid.
IMO the changes to the law were a sham! It will do nothing to really lower auto insurance rates. The entire argument by lawmakers about medical costs driving the rates up was a lie.
Stay safe out there.
