In 1985 I was a music teacher in rural Arizona having moved from Michigan and saw no big difference in accents between the two. But when I got on the phone to an instrument supplier in New York City to help a student buy a new flute, I could barely understand the woman in NY her accent was so strong! That would not be as likely anymore. Mass media, internet, and mobility has largely flattened most American accents
