I have often said that even had the north let the south secede and become a separate nation we would STILL have gone to war with them at a future date. The south was a slave-expansionist government. Slavers even considered annexing Cuba and Brazil! They had already expanded into Texas.

Slavers rejection of the the 1850 compromises meant that as both the USA and the CSA expanded, they were bound to reach a conflict point.
