I have bicycled in numerous places in the USA, Austria, and Shenzhen China.

The USA is more dangerous NOT because we don't have bike lanes but because we have ENTITLED drivers who think the road is ONLY for cars. If we had better driver mentality we wouldn't even really need bike lanes. It's about attitude.

In Shenzhen in 2015, I was biking on a 6 lane road (three lanes each direction) very busy. The road went over another as an overpass and as I descended the other side there was a merge lane coming in from my right. Cab driver hauling ass but as soon as he saw me he slowed down, eased to pass me, then stepped on the gas again. Bikes, mopeds etc are ubiquitous in China so ALL drivers are fully conditioned to look for them.

Here? Not so much. The entitled car driver attitude is the roads are only for cars and bikes belong "over there" or "somewhere else" or "on a bike path". never mind that you cannot get everywhere you want on a bicycle without going on the road, because bike lanes and paths don't go everywhere
