I bought a new gas range a year ago. It was suggested to me to get an induction unit but the cost was more than double. In addition, our 102 year old home also did not have the voltage running to the kitchen to support that option.

And something else- my best friend just got an induction unit and mentioned he needed to get a few new pots and pans. I asked why and he said you need pans on which a magnet would stick. I checked my couple thousand dollars worth of Calphelon pans and NONE would have worked on an induction stove! Had I gone through the expense of double-the-cost unit plus electrician I would then have literally obsoleted my entire cookware collection!

I agree with another respondent, too, that the report of the 'danger' of gas stoves is far overblown. The new ranges are more efficient and most no longer have a pilot light so there's that environmental improvement.
