I am a Michigan resident and ran for Congress myself in 2016 against Bill Huizinga in Michigan 2nd congressional district.

Regarding Fred Upton, the newly-created Michigan redistricting Commission new Congressional maps have put Fred Upton and Bill Huizinga in the same congressional district for 2022.

It is indeed a good question whether Fred Upton will run again. Huizenga is not exactly a trumpist, but more of an opportunist that tries to play to the Trump side of the Republican Party. That area of the state of Michigan rarely vote democratic. Indeed, the 2nd congressional district as currently configured has not had a Democrat in office in almost 60 years.

Personally I would like to see a primary election between Upton and Huizinga it would be very illuminating as to the nature of the electorate on the Republican side of the political aisle

Frankly I am disappointed my own congressman (Peter Meijer, MI-CD3) voted party line against the bill.
