France reparations after the Franco-Prussian war was only 5 billion gold francs in reparations over five years. The amount was proportional to France's population and was intended to be the same as the indemnity Napoleon imposed on Prussia in 1807.

The reparations forced on Germany after WW1 were much more harsh and onerous financially. Also, Germany was stripped of overseas colonies.

As explained by Richard Overy in his masterful book "Blood and Ruins- THE LAST IMPERIAL WAR, 1931-1945" WW2 was as much about colonies as it was about direct issues in Europe. Japan, Italy and Germany were all jealous of the French and British for their overseas colonial holdings and basically saying to themselve "if they can have colonies why can't we"? as colonies were seen as a means to acquire national wealth
