Monday, July 22: News reports indicate President Biden has been meeting with high level Democratic officials, Democratic elected officials and advisors concerning the upcoming Democratic Convention and subsequent election

Tuesday, July 23: The White House announced a presidential speech to the nation on Wednesday at 8pm.

Wednesday, July 24 at 8pm: Biden appears on our television screens.

“My fellow Americans. We live in a divisive time with heated rhetoric fanning the flames of violence. Our partisan divide seems unbridgeable. We see the demonization of migrants and of our own citizens who may be different than others.

When I was elected four years ago, I wanted to be the bridge to a new more stable America. I believe we have made substantial progress. I am proud at what we have accomplished.

With the CHIPs Act, we are bring back to the United States a critical manufactured item which had shut down our auto industry during the pandemic.

With the Inflation Reduction Act we have spurred jobs and growth in green energy even as the United States produces more oil than ever.

The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law provides $284 billion for transportation needs, which includes repairing bridges and roadways, public transit and airports, electric vehicles and low emission public transportation; $65 billion for broadband internet; $73 billion for power infrastructure; and $55 billion for clean drinking water.

We have addressed drug prices, protected workers from abuse in the workplace by ensuring proper overtime pay. We established the Office of Gun Violence Prevention, and in 2023 schools were awarded $286 million in federal dollars to support student wellness and school mental health professionals. We have taken on the financial sector to end discriminatory mortgage lending. We have worked to eliminate junk fees that inflate the cost of doing business for consumers. We have worked to lower the burden of student debt on millions of students which will spur economic activity.

We have re-invigorated the power of labor unions to balance the power of corporations.

We have provided funding to advance cancer research- a moonshot approach to ending cancer.

We have created the Cyber Safety Review Board, a government review panel charged with investigating the most significant computer security breaches that have affected the country.

We have worked to reduce migration at the southern border, but there is more to do. We need funding from Congress to increase the ranks of our Border Patrol and immigration/asylum courts. We also need to address the root causes of migration by helping the nations of central and latin America be stable, safe and prosperous so that their citizens do not feel the need to make a hazardous journey to America.

On the foreign policy front, we have worked to aid Ukraine in the fight of its life to keep its citizens free from the tyranny of Putin’s Russia. We convinced our allies Japan and South Korea, who have an historic distrust of one another, to join a tri-lateral alliance with the United States.

In short, we have a strong economy and job market, inflation has dropped and our standing with our allies overseas is solid. Even so, I know many Americans are still feeling unsettled and anxious.

I have served our nation for 36 years as a Senator, 8 years as vice-president to Barak Obama and now have had the honor of being your president. Despite our accomplishments, I know many have concerns about my ability to do the job for another four years. I believe I can do the job, but this isn’t about me or my belief. It’s about you and your belief.

So, to quote Lyndon Johnson in 1968, “I do not believe that I should devote an hour or a day of my time to any personal partisan causes or to any duties other than the awesome duties of this office — the Presidency of your country. Accordingly, I shall not seek the nomination of my party for another term as your President.” I have decided further to resign from the office of the Presidency effective July 31st, handing over the reins of the executive branch to my vice-president Kamala Harris who will be sworn in as the first woman president in the history of the United States.

Good night and God bless America.
