Actually it was not Sinn Fein fighting the British, it was the IRB Irish Republican Brotherhood as the IRA.

And in the Dail, Sinn Fein split wit the anti-treaty becoming Fianna Fail under Devalera and Finn Gael under the Collins crew. The IRA split as well resulting in the civil war.
