According to historian HW Brands in his biography of Grant (The Man Who Saved the Union: Ulysses Grant in War and Peace), Grant almost ran again after leaving office because he was so disturbed by the fact that the subsequent administration was going backwards on civil rights in the south.

Brands specifically wrote the book to rehabilitate Grant's reputation.
