A consumption tax (sales tax) is HIGHLY REGRESSIVE and will hurt people of limited means more than it ever hurts the wealthy- but then for Republicans- hurting people is the point.

The debt ceiliing is a gimmick and should be eliminated. It is likely unconstitutional but we will never get that result from the current SCOTUS
